THE SALUKI, also known as Persian greyhound and the gazelle hound, comes from the Middle East and historians believe it is the oldest breed of the domestic dog. The first known evidence of the Saluki, was its depiction in carvings found in the area of ancient Mesopotamia, dating back to about 14,000 B.C. Around 3300 B.C. they were brought to Egypt, where they became companions of ruling classes. Many Salukis were mummified and have been discovered in the tombs of their masters.
SALUKI'S CHARACTERE is gentle, affectionate, but not demonstrative. He is sensitive and friendly, but somewhat aloof, even with his family. Good with gentle older children. Fairly submissive to dominant people and dogs. Very independant --does best with another Saluki as a companion. A pleasant and serene companion and a good watchdog, though not aggressive. Graceful and elegant and natural athlete.
